89 years ago, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King was born. Today, headlines across the country detail that the President of the United States does not consider himself a racist. And he is a racist.
Injustice Anywhere Is a Threat to Justice Everywhere
In King’s Letter From a Birmingham Jail, he wrote the heading above to his fellow Christian pastors who did not understand why we went from Atlanta to Birmingham. He compared his steps to Birmingham to the prophets and apostles who carried their word of God. He argued he was carrying the word of freedom.
For too long people had been telling him to wait. This was not the right time. Let people become more comfortable on their own time.
King argued that it is easy for people who are not mistreated to tell others to wait. If you can get a cup of coffee or food. If you can get a hotel room with fear. Never fear if a family member will not come home safe and sound. And of course, never have to break the law to defend their right to exist.
We should never forget that everything Adolf Hitler did in Germany was “legal” and everything the Hungarian freedom fighters did in Hungary was “illegal.” It was “illegal” to aid and comfort a Jew in Hitler’s Germany. Even so, I am sure that, had I lived in Germany at the time, I would have aided and comforted my Jewish brothers. If today I lived in a Communist country where certain principles dear to the Christian faith are suppressed, I would openly advocate disobeying that country’s antireligious laws.
But overall, I cannot say anything about Rev. King that others would say a lot better. All I can point out is: we need to all read the Letter, remember what he said and did made many people very mad, and think about what we are doing as a nation.
But Things Are So Much Better…
We have completely forgotten our brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico. Millions still suffer from the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Over 1,000 people died. Hundred have committed suicide since.
Republicans are defending the President saying that he didn’t call most of the world a shithole, but instead a shithouse. Because there is a difference.
Federal agents storm 7-11 stores looking for undocumented workers. 21 people were arrested.
Children protected by the government about a year ago now are uncertain of their status due to a bumbling goverment.
Trying to intimidate immigrants through the Census.
